Why do straight people support LGBTQ people?
LGBTQ+ people are human beings. As a fellow human being, I would like all human beings to have the same human rights.

If you start making exceptions and declare that some humans do not have human rights, then none of us do. See Nazi Germany.

Not even loyal Nazi soldiers had human rights if Hitler decided they were secretly undermining him by not magically defeating all of his enemies flawlessly. To say nothing of the countless Jews, socialists, atheists, communists, Christians, gypsies, gays, Poles, Russians, and others he decided didn’t have human rights and promptly slaughtered.

The first-time human rights are violated, all of our rights are violated.

Unless we stand together for human rights and equal rights for all people, all across the world, then none of us have human rights.

Human rights only exist if we all defend each other’s rights.

And if I want gays and lesbians and Christians and Muslims and Jews and immigrants and blacks and browns and others to give a shit about me when someone comes knocking on my door to strip me of my rights, then I’d better fucking show up for them.

Do you know what’s superior to selfishness and short-sightedness? Empathy and reason and cooperation.

We have a sacred duty to defend our fellow human beings from injustices and disasters and tragedies, especially preventable ones like genocide or lawmakers stripping people of their rights.

I am an atheist, and these are the things I find sacred. Human life, human rights, and human dignity. Nothing and no one will take those things away from anyone else, without me throwing a big gigantic angry conniption fit about it.

LBGTQ people are people, too. Their sexual orientation is - in most social or professional interactions - completely and unequivocally irrelevant.

I support non-straight people because I have friends and relatives who are LGBTQ and because I love them, too.

I find the answer a little disturbing, as it seems to assume that a “default” standpoint would be to support only those people/initiatives/ideas which are useful to me as a person, directly.

No, people. That’s called “selfishness”.
