What mental health issues are gay men more likely to deal with?
An issue that dominates the mental health of gay men is the rejection from the family when the gay person comes out or is outed. I can’t remember more than a couple of gay men who didn’t struggle with attachment issues caused by rejecting parents or parents.

It’s a devastating feeling that begins long before the young person is faced with revealing his secret to his family, who can be rejected, and then he must deal with parents or a parent who offers more of the same. The years leading up to the reveal can be terrifying for the young man, and it’s a rare young person who leaves home without the tears from a breaking heart, and the fear of an uncertain future without the support of family, and sometimes even friends.

These separation issues are often the root cause for young, gay men to seek the destructive companionship of exploitative men who lead them into drugs, alcohol and the shady side of the porn industry. They are depressed, lonely, and often homesick but are cast out and suicide seems possible.

The dynamics for recovering these unfortunate “throwaways” are at major gay community centers in cities across the nation. They are a haven for the rejects and misused and lonely kids no one else has stood by with open arms. Run by professionals and volunteers, the gay community centers are a bastion against the cold, hard reality of the streets and the odds against a lonely kid making it.

Thanks for your request and my thanks to Caesar C. for his invaluable input and for cooperating in a successful 18 months of counselling, and as he advised me,” when the teacher is ready, the student will appear.”
