Who is more accepted?

Lesbianism doesn't typically provoke as visceral a reaction in straight society, making it more acceptable, for a few reasons:
  • It has long been eroticized by pornography and is a common fantasy for straight men.
  • Men don't find it threatening to their masculinity.
  • It isn't commonly associated with anal sex and avoids the "ick factor" associated with the gay male sex.
It's important to note, however, that they don't necessarily have it easy. The interest of straight men can be tiresome and sometimes threatening. Lesbians who display masculine traits face homophobia for not adhering to gender norms. And one of the most common complaints is when their sexual orientation isn't taken seriously - because so many young women are open about bisexual experimentation, real lesbians are often treated as if their orientation is merely a phase or something done for attention.

Are lesbians more accepted than gay men?
You could argue that lesbians are more socially accepted than gay men, but it's actually a really complex answer. Here's a quick summary of my thoughts on the topic:

Many heterosexual men have a very strict definition of masculinity, and gay men are not seen as masculine enough to them. As a result, gay men are typically met with violence and harsh words more than lesbians are. (Some straight men's masculinity can be incredibly unstable, and just the thought of a man who doesn't fit his idea of what a masculine man should be an upset him)

The way lesbians are 'socially accepted' is where things get confusing. Obviously, they are not treated as harshly as many gay men have been, at least not in physical violence. However, the reason we see so many straight men saying they're ‘fine with lesbians but not with gay men is that lesbians (or just women in general) are so objectified that all these men see are two hot girls that would make for a great threesome. These men have trouble processing the thought that some women just aren't attracted to men.

Lesbians are sexualized for the male gaze.

Obviously, that's not why lesbians exist, they exist for themselves and each other.

However, it was a man's world for a long time, they made all the rules, and they find lesbians sexy so lesbians have been 'more' accepted than gay men.

I think girls are sometimes more open minded about experimenting with their sexuality because even if they don't necessarily consider girls to be attractive it will at least provide them with male attention.

These are just my theories. I like men and women but I don't think I would have awoken my attractiveness to women if I was never a teenager wanting as much attention as I could get my vagina on from boys. It was a gateway to me learning I like women because women are great not just because boys find it sexy.

I also think gay men are very sexy and I prefer gay porn to straight porn.
