June 28th is the anniversary of the Stonewall riots.

50 years ago, Police raided the Stonewall Inn, a tavern in New York City.

Back then, police regularly raided gay establishments and arrested anyone who had a certain percentage of the opposite sex clothing on. These people were acting flamboyant and anyone that they wanted.

This included all the drag queens, those wearing heels, make-up or who just appeared different. This police activity had been going on for a long time, and the patrons of Stonewall got fed up with it and rioted. Actively fighting against the police.

The area around the club at that time had become something of a Gay Ghetto, so when the riot began, the yelling drew a crowd who joined in the rioting.

It lasted more than one day, but June 28th was when it started. In many ways, June 28th is the LGBTQ+ version of Independence Day.

June 28, 1969, is the date of the Stonewall Riots in New York. The LGBT community attacked the NYPD when they tried to enter the bar and arrest the Gays present. The next day more Gays came in from all over New York and other states to voice and physically refuse to obey the police orders. This date is considered the beginning of the Pride Movement in America and worldwide.
