Are lesbians really more widely accepted than gay men in the United States?
It depends on where you live and your behavior. Gay men and women who have families and/or are at the mature end of the spectrum. I usually do not see too much discrimination until they try to get married in some states or you have some douche in a neighborhood harassing them. But most lesbians seem to be laid back in society. Some men however not all just the ones many in North America have a hard time accepting are flaming queens or drag queens. Many gay men wear men's clothes and still get harassed but not as much as the other two. And this, however, does not sit well with many people. Unless they are in an accepting community, homophobic people seek them out to harm them. This happens far too often and it is sad.

This is not a judgment or stereotype, just my perception of what I have witnessed while living in North America
