  1. Fix Your Body: The biggest mistake is to start fixing your mind. You can’t think your way to mental health when your body is dysfunctional. It’s like putting a skilled driver in a broken car. Repair the vehicle first — don’t overeat, exercise some and sleep well.
  2. Don’t Watch News: Like a sponge, your subconscious mind absorbs anything it comes in contact with. It’s your duty to oversee what it absorbs. If all you listen to is rape, war and deaths then good luck not being anxious.
  3. Relieve Pressure: We are constantly bombarded with the ideal Instagram life. This can put you under pressure to perform in life. But the truth is you can’t perform under pressure. You must take your life one day at a time.
  4. Remove Perfectionism: The need to be perfect is the seed for anxiety. You get in a loop second-guessing your actions. You have to be okay with mistakes. There will be no pressure when you give yourself room to be imperfect.
  5. Nutrition: Food is fuel. The quality of it will affect the performance of your body and brain. Increase your food in quality, not quantity. The best start is to avoid processed and sugary foods.
  6. Don’t Resist: You can’t splash your way to a still pond. Similarly, you can’t think of your way out of stress and anxiety. Accept and be aware of the physical symptoms. If you don't resist that headache, it won’t persist.

How does someone keep mentally healthy?
Staying mentally healthy requires the ability to detach, but helps at the same time. I read a great book called the Four Agreements a couple of years ago that had some great life advice when it comes to this process. These agreements are:

1. Be Impeccable with your Word
Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the Word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your Word in the direction of truth and love.

2. Don’t Take Anything Personally
Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.

3. Don’t Make Assumptions
Find the courage to ask questions and express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness, and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

4. Always Do Your Best
Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse, and regret.

One person is said to be mentally healthy when he/she has only limited anxiety, 7 —8 hours of sleep, the ability to discharge work without stress, limited worries, minimal or nil health issues, and adequate financial support or supply for food, clothes, and shelter. The definition goes on and on, but in short, a person who controls his emotions (towards anxiety, depression, food, needs) is mentally healthy. So, to become mentally healthy, you need to keep your emotions under check.
