We prefer dental dams since many condoms tend to have additional lubricants. A condom can also be used over sex toys to be safely shared if a lesbian couple is into such things, but I have no interest in that kind of sex.
Of course, condoms make beautiful water balloons to throw at other people, which I have used them for in the past. They can hold a lot of volumes and don't break easily.

For sure if you are using or sharing the same vibrator or dildo with each other or indulge in anal & vaginal penetration at the same time with the same-sex toy without cleaning it properly. A condom will protect both from STI, STD or bacterial fungal infection.
